Hundreds of peonies are in full bloom at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth. They are growing “wild” in the fields and woods of the sanctuary as well as in five neat beds near the environmental center. These plants are descendents of those planted by David Moulton, a Portland lawyer and dedicated conservationist. He planted more than seven acres of peonies at Gilsland Farm and cultivated more than 400 varieties. The Maine Audubon staff and volunteers transplanted these flowers from the remains of a Moulton garden in the late 1980s. Photo taken June 17, 2015.
