On August 10, 1897, the Howard W. Middleton schooner was heading from Philadelphia to Portland, loaded with 894 tons of hard and soft coal. In near zero visibility, behind schedule, sailing at night, she strayed off course and struck a ledge at the mouth of the Spurwink River in Scarborough. The ledge ripped a hole in the vessel, but all crew members made it safely to shore. The wreck has been part of the scenery at Higgins Beach ever since. Photo taken June 18, 2015.
