Easton
Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from February’s photo.
I read this with much delight and nostalgia. Easton was my home for more than 20 years. My sons grew up there. My grandson went to school there. My great-grandfather homesteaded there after he drove teams of oxen north from Oakland. My grandmother worked at the french-fry plant owned by Freddy Vahlsing. It was her first job outside the home, and she was so proud of it. The first farm the Amish purchased was owned by my ex-husband. I suffered from culture shock the first time I had car trouble elsewhere and everyone just drove around me. A cop stopped to have me turn on my emergency lights, then drove off. That would never happen in the County. Thank you for featuring this oft-neglected part of Maine. — Linda Morse Cronkite, Lewiston, Maine
